Last night, my gammy and I went to see the new musical Rock of Ages. It was PHENOMENAL. I highly recommend it to anybody, especially those that enjoy musicals or 80s music.
I have been to several musicals now at Segerstrom Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, sitting in the same area (the cheap seats at the top, I'm a college student, it's all I can afford!). This most recent performance was by far the most incredible of the four I have now seen there. South Pacific, Hair, and Beauty and the Beast were all fantastic shows and the performers had incredible voices, but they still fell short to the Rock of Ages cast (that include Constantine from American Idol).
This cast did two things that I was always taught as a performer: they projected and performed to the audience members in the very back of the auditorium. Sitting in the back, the performances can tend to be a bit lacking, but this was an exception. Every cast member on that stage made me feel like I was a part of the show, living in the 80s, fighting to keep Sunset Strip alive.
Throughout the show, I found myself singing along to practically every song. Despite being born at the end of the 80s, my parents raised me on that music. I went through my phase of begrudgingly listening to it when I was in middle school, but now I am so grateful that my parents put me through that "torture." I have been able to enjoy some of the greatest music there is thanks to it.
If you love the 80s, love musicals, or just plain love a good time, then go see Rock of Ages if you get the opportunity, don't just wait for the movie.
